SAM Sam Houston Middle School 8th Grade Newsletter HOUSTON August 2019 MIDDLE SCHOOL Welcome Back Texans! Campus Announcements: We are so excited for this new year of learning and academic growth! As we get this first six weeks underway, we want to remind parents and students of some important information Outerwear: Students are not allowed to wear hoodies. They may wear a solid colored jacket for their appropriate grade level, however the jacket can not have a hood. Students will be instructed to remove outerwear that is in violation of the dress code as they enter the building. ID Badges: Students are required to wear ID badges at all times while in the building. If students do not have their badge for any reason, they will be required to get a replacement badge. Replacement badges are $3 each. Please make sure your student has their badge daily. There is no parking in the south parking lot by the gym. In the best interest of our students and as a safety precaution, this parking lot will be closed as it is reserved for our buses. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to building a community of learning for all! Parent's Corner: my your parent liaison. I am confident that my involvement with families of diverse backgrounds will make a positive impact on interactions witk the faculty, teachers, and oun students. I strongly believe that parental involvement is the numben one facton in helping studonts succeed.I look forwand to working with you as a team to help your child be successful. The Little Prince - Department News Social Studies U.S.History We open with Exploration and Colonization of North and South America. We begin with Columbus discovering the Bahamas and how it leads to other European countries racing to create colonies in the Western Hemisphere. From there we delve into the establishment of the 13 English colonies. The students gain an understanding of the colonial regions, the need for representative government, and the various economic activities that made the colonies so unique from one another. At the end of this unit students will begin to see how the self-sufficiency of the colonies eventually leads to their fight for independence from England.
