Congratulations, State Championship BASS Louisiana NATION YOUTH May 4-5 Calcasieu River Moss Bluff OPINION: Are the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University justified? BY: MICHAEL MUMPHREY Gata Data Reporter Early the morning on of April 30, a throng of protesters made up of students and outsiders alike, barricaded and vandalized Hamilton Hall (the location of the Dean's office at Columbia University in New at York) and urged the university to boycott companies that support Israel in the ongoing Hamas War, a conflict that has violently taken the lives of thousands of innocent Gazan civilians. Along with that, the demonstrators deterred Jewish students from entering the the building. The NYPD promptly responded and arrested thousands of demonstrators. where the The situation got so bad to the por of anotherge had to cancel the graduation ceremony on May 15 in fear in fear another uprising, and NYPD police have been required to stay stationed at Columbia until May 17. This would bring one to question whether the students were justified in their cause. While their hearts were in the right place in terms of what for, the demonstrators should consider a more they were annra so they can get what they want in a more efficient non-violent way because protesting violently abuses ones rights under the first amendment and result. Firstly, student's have a right to protest under the First Amendment of the Constitution, but there are limitations. On December 16, 1965, Mary y Beth Tinker, a 13-year old junior high student, was suspended after she wore black armband along with her friends to protest the Vietnam Conflict. Four other students were suspended including John Tinker, her brother. The school board informed the students that they would not be allowed to return to school until they I to stop wearing the armbands on campus. Although the students returned following Christmas Break, the Tinkers filed a lawsuit against the school board. The fight would last for almost three years until it the Supreme reached the Supreme Court, and on February 24 speech in schools as long as it doesn't "materially disrupt the Court ruled that students can practice freedom of s 2019). This means that student's are rights to to perform à protests or of their school." within their disrupts the educational environmentions, but not if it nali classmates (like if someone someone got into a fist-fight the rights of other because The protests at someone wouldn't participate in a protest/demonstrae admin members and Columbia would fit the latter categding in y school property and blockaded a they vandalized students alike reside to perform tasks that help the campus run smoothly or take classes; Ergo the students are not only abusing the law, they are also abusing the First Amendment with their current methods of protesting. The only reason the NYPD got involved was because the protesters were causing a violent disturbance, and the whole thing could have easily been dodged Secondly, violent protesting can put a damper on the cause you're fighting for by doing more harm than good and ending up with an outcome different than the one you desired. Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King described nonviolent protest in his famous Birmingham Jail Letter, stating "In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action." Along with this, Gandhi, stated "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent." It is clear by the effects that the Hamilton Hall demonstration at Columbia University does not meet this criterion. Imagine the countless amount of money that the college would have to expend in order to pay for for the school property the protesters damaged, and imagine the valuable class-time that was lost by the Jew the Jewish students who were denied entry into the hall because of unwarranted anti-semitism from a a group becoming the thing y swore to destroy. Along with that, imagine the countless sheartened families who were excited to see their student lent cross the and I receive their diploma on May 15 on their college graduation day, but cannot due to fear of a violent disruption. The only reason the NYPD got involved was because the protesters were harming the people and the University were protesting general. the aim of the demonstration was to hinder the resolve of the Israel-Hamas War by defunding businesses that support Israel, a could have just as easily been set up with the dean of the peaceful and civil negotiations. Even still, the demonstrators could easily stage a boycott of the businesses t that support Israel, causing the business to lose money due to people not making purchases or using their service, which would more than likely make them sympathetic. The students could have followed Tinker's lead and worn an article of clothing to class that raises awareness of the cause, garnering a more passive expression of their first amendment rights, and the fault would be on on anyone who tried to violently force them to remove the garment. another pivotal leader of ader of Indian civil I rights movement, Mahatma stage Up for In conclusion, although they possess the heart to make their cause alid, the pro-palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University lack the non-violent techniques that make a protest have an effective and lasting impact on a community. So why should you, the reader, care? Well, should St. Amant students organize a protest on the issue or any other issues in the future, students would be equipped with effective and peaceful methods that would help them get what they wanted, and we are guaranteed protection by the constitution.
