The Gata Data ST. AMANT HIGH SCHOOL 12035 HIGHWAY 431, ST. AMANT, LA 70774 MAY 2024 BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK BY: XYAN DOBARD Gata Data Reporter The Lady Gator Softball team defeated Ponchatoula in a 7-2 victory for the Division One Non-Select State Championship this past Saturday in Sulphur. The Gators concluded the season with a record of 25-10 and earned their third championship in as many years. "Winning a three-peat is absolutely amazing, I mean we put in a lot of work, a lot of people doubted us, but we definitely deserved this victory" stated senior and LSU commit Alix Franklin. The Gators knew that this season would not be a breeze following the loss of a major senior class, however they persevered and used each setback as learning opportunity. Standout performances came from across the board, with sophomore pitcher Braylee Decoteau only allowing three hits on the game. Seniors Emmmaleigh Theriot and Franklin had a home run each, and senior Makinzey Elisar had two base hits, two runs, and an acrobatic catch over the fence to save a run. Elisar also won the game's Most Outstanding Player award. How they got here: The Saturday before, The Lady Gators defeated Sam Houston in the quarterfinals to advance to play in the semi-finals in Sulphur. This victory was led by a strong team effort from the Gators, and a standout performance from Senior Makinzey Elisar as well as fellow seniors. The game was a back-and-forth battle as the lead changed multiple times throughout the third and fourth innings. The Gators ators got on a roll towards the end of the fourth inning with a walk from Olivia Johnson and a homerun from Senior Alix Franklin. Following these amazing efforts, at the top of the fifth, Elisar hit a double to give St. Amant the lead by one followed by Mary Beth Zeller allowing for another run to come in. The Gator's lead was cut down to one in the sixth inning and then kept the game at a stand still until the seventh. With runners on first and third base, the Sam Houston Broncos hit a ball short center which was caught by Elisar on the run, who then rifled it down to home to tag the runner out and secure the win for the Lady Gators. Elisar r stated, “….. up until that point, it was very intense because we knew the game was winding down... but as soon as the ball was hit to me, I knew exactly what I had to do." She emphasized how much the repetitions they get of these in game situations in practice helped her in the big moments. The Lady Gators then faced Southside in the semis for their third straight year on Friday, April 26 with a dominant 8-3 victory which included homers from both seniors Mary Beth Zeller and Alix Franklin. The club meets on Wednesdays after and is open to all chool until 3:45 pm students on dents on campus. The club was created by junior Fresno Swindle to foresee major legislation targeting queer people, especially in education. "I wanted to have ways w where people can get educated on things like this before we cannot anymore." Swindle 'Swindle stated. The true catalyst, however, was a book that Swindle read, and is currently being read book Revolutionary written by by members of the book club: Voices: A Multicultural The k.written by Queer Anthology. Amy Sonnie, is a collection of essays late 1990s ng queer adults during the sand early 2000s. "I thought it was an interesting retrospective on how queer culture has evolved," Swindle reflected. Another main reason why the Book Club was created was to give a safe space for queer students on campus. GSA sponsor Brianne Baggett stated that she wants the club to be "a place where they can come together and have great small group discussions about the literature we read." The existence of the club also expresses the importance of reading queer literature. "It words feel valid "It makes queer people's valid," explained Baggett, gives them a a sense of identity and for non-queer people to learn about the queer experience and what they all go through, positive or negative." Letting go of one's personal biases and reading other types of literature, according to Swindle, can also "challenge those belief systems to be a more multicultural and accepting person. Ask Allie Dear Allie, With the school year ending, I'm having a hard time finishing my assignments on time. Is there any way that you could give me some advice on how to manage my time properly? Hello Student, as the year concludes it is easy to get sidetracked with other things happening in your life as well as excited for the school year to be over with. Managing your time and making sure you have all your assignments done and turned in on time gets difficult, especially around this time. Many ways to manage your time are by prioritizing your most important work first, managing your time, and making sure that you are in an environment where you won't get distracted easily. BY: EVIE FORSYTH Gata Data Reporter Opinion: Educational Over the years, educational apps have forced their way into students' lives. Although some apps like Kahoot, Khan Academy, IXL and many others have a positive influence on learning, other apps have made it easier for students to cheat, procrastinate their work, and simply not do their work. Al generated apps have undermined students' ability to succeed in more ways than one; students now rely on technology rather than their own learning abilities and success. The use of these apps can generate essays on countless topics, solve almost any equation, all while teachers lack the ability to restrict and prevent the use of AI. Teachers also take Gators take on Regionals track meet BY: ELIZABETH LANGSTON Gata Data Reporter Last week, the St. The Amant track team traveled to Dutchtown High School to compete in the Regionals track meet of the season. The Gators left the meet with Junior Robert Williams qualifying for state in the long jump. Williams placed with a jump of 22ft 8 inches and finished off 3rd in the region. Freshman Brittany Green qualified for state in the triple jump. Green placed with a jump of 36 ft .5 inches finished off 2nd in the region. The Gata Data would like to congratulate these two athletes who placed as well as the ones who competed alongside them. The next step for these two individual athletes is to compete in the state level track meet this Saturday. apps advantage of artificial intelligence. For teachers it is easy to assign their students with assignments that automatically grade rather than having to individually grade each student's answers. Although videos and assignments like IXL aren' 't necessarily AI, the excess use of technology and computer based learning is harder for students to comprehend the material but easier for teachers to sit back and put a letter in the grade book. Overall educational apps have more negative effects due to the overuse and abuse of its ability from students and teachers rather than boosting learning.
