HUGHES Choir bags double sweepstakes at the festival for the BY: MARIA MELLAD Gata Data Reporter second consecutive year On March 14 the STA Choir went to the annual LMEA Choir Festival. This year, both advanced choir and small vocal ensemble won sweepstakes. Getting sweepstakes is when a choir receives all ones for their performance, which is considered the best possible score. When asked about the experience of winning twice in a row, Choir Director Sara Bray, stated "... it felt really good to get double sweepstakes last year, and to be able to do it again... we feel on top of the world." To prepare for this massive achievement both Advanced Choir and Small Vocal had to balance daily practice, on top of practice for their other choir performances and their school work. Bray stated "It has been a very intense spring semester. Especially for Advanced Choir because they get new members in January; so it is a brand new choir in January, but Small Vocal is the same year-round. Regardless, both groups don't start that festival preparation until we come back in the spring. And it was kind of tricky because it's always a little slow to get started... and when it comes to picking the music they are going to sing, I need to hear how the choir will sound before I pick that, and there's that process." Bray also mentioned how the loss of days, due to the colder weather this semester also impacted the amount of in-class practice time the students had as well as the time taken to practice for Legally Blonde and their Choir Shows. She stated, "I mean it has just been such a packed semester. I am just so impressed with my kids and how much they were able to really rally and say we are doing this." Bray continued "Every time we challenged them they rose to the occasion." Almost every year for the Choir festival, they change the process. Last year more than half of the festival was focused on sight singing and they changed the whole process. Bray stated "So, for me, as their director, I'm also going in blind because I don't know how hard the sightseeing is going to be. And because of this, we don't really know what to expect. We just always make sure to over-prepare so that we can handle anything, And this year we really were prepared for that part. And that made me super proud that my kids have elevated their skill set so much. And overall it was just a really successful day." Bray continued "It's just always so fun to be a part of that journey and see how much they grow." When asked about the experiences as a whole Bray stated "I am just really proud. I want that to be said. How proud I am of these kids and how fulfilling it is to be adjudicated in, like, a music setting, because we know when we do our concert over here, everybody appreciates them. It's a little bit different when you go into a room of music people with music judges, and you're just like, I hope they like. what we're doing." The choir's final performance this year will be on April 29 at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in French Settlement. There they will perform the music that they performed at festival as well as other songs.

March 2024 Page 2 Chase Kelley: Fulfilling Dreams Close to Home BY: GABBY BOUQUET Gata Data Reporter St. Amant High School's senior standout, Chase Kelley, has recently made a significant decision for his future, both academically and athletically. With a passion for baseball and a desire to stay close to home, Chase has committed to Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) to continue his education and pursue his baseball dreams as an infielder. For Chase, the opportunity to continue his academic and athletic journey at BRCC was a perfect fit. One of his primary goals was to be able to achieve his baseball dreams while still being able to enjoy the comforts of home. BRCC not only allowed him to do just that but also provided him with the chance to continue his journey alongside two of his Gator teammates, Trent Laporte and Layne Swanson. Having familiar faces by his side as he transitions to college life will be great for Chase. The support and connection he shares with Trent and Layne have made the decision to attend BRCC even more rewarding. Together, they look forward to representing St.Amant both on the field and in the classroom. A notable aspect of Chase's game day routine is his pre-game ritual with his teammate, Ryder Molea. Before every game, Chase and Ryder make it a point to gather behind third base and pray together. This ritual not only serves as a source of strength and focus for the two athletes but also strengthens their bond as teammates. Chase's outlook on both baseball and life is one of positivity and faith. He believes in trusting the process while also maintaining self-belief, a philosophy that has guided him through both all his highs and lows. "Trust in the process while also believing in yourself," Chase advises, highlighting the importance of perseverance and confidence in achieving one's goals. Additionally, he emphasizes the role of faith in his journey, stating, "God has a plan; just trust in it." This trust in a higher plan has been a driving force in Chase's pursuit of his dreams. As Chase prepares to embark on this new chapter of his life at BRCC, he does so with determination, optimism, and a strong support system by his side. With his talent, dedication, and positive mindset, Chase Kelley is poised to make a significant impact both on and off the field, leaving a lasting legacy at St. Amant High School and beyond.
