ST. AMANT HIGH SCHOOL 12035 HIGHWAY 431, ST. AMANT, LA 70774 ● FEBRUARY 2024 Rayne Steely proves women can achieve anything Throughout her time on the team, Rayne faced formidable opponents, both male and female, but she never backed down from a challenge. Her motivation and resilience were on full display during the state championship match, where she emerged victorious. BY: REBECCA CRESIE Gata Data Reporter Saint Amant High School is buzzing with excitement as junior Rayne Steely made history by becoming the first girl on the girls wrestling team to win the state championship. Rayne's journey to this achievement was one filled with dedication, passion, and the unwavering support of her friends, family, and coach, Clinton Brownell. Rayne, a dedicated student at St. Amant High School, has always had a knack for athletics. Her interest in wrestling sparked from her background in martial arts, where she developed skills and discipline that laid the foundation for her success on the wrestling mat. Despite being one of the few girls in a predominantly male-dominated sport, Rayne never let gender barriers deter her from pursuing her passion. Coach Clinton Brownell, himself no stranger to breaking gender stereotypes in sports as a male cheerleader, played a crucial role in Rayne's journey. Despite initial skepticism from some people, Coach Brownell saw Rayne's potential and provided her with the guidance, support, and training necessary to excel in the sport. For Rayne, wrestling isn't just about winning matches; it's about camaraderie and a sense of belonging. She views her teammates as family and draws strength from their support both on and off the mat. February 2024 BY: PARIS GOMEZ Gata Data Reporter The effects of vaping:is it worth it? time and their body can't handle it. They take a hit from a device that has something in it that's more dangerous than nicotine and they get sick." Vaping is a serious addiction that can create internal and external issues. Health issues like... and issues with family and education. Assistant Principal Angela Boudreaux addresses the growing concern with vaping on St Amant's campus. "The main one is students leaving class to go to the bathroom to vape. So they miss instruction." Boudreaux says. "Like they're missing classroom time. They're using their phones to text somebody, hey, can I get a hit or can you meet me in the bathroom?" With kids missing valuable instruction time, this will negatively impact their grades. And it's all due to their vaping addiction. Vapes are taken on a regular basis according to Boudreaux. "Some days, I haven't had any, but we might have six or seven on another day. So there can be some days where we get a bunch and some days where we get none." But it's all in accordance with what is reported to administrators, which leads to the searching of the kids." And there are instances of teachers finding kids vaping in class or at least suspecting kids vaping in class. So if we get a tip and we get tips from the hotline, we get emails, we get messages on Remind, get some things from teachers and from students. If we suspect that we are going to search a student because none of those devices are allowed on campus. None of them." This ban is placed because drugs are illegal and it promotes an unhealthy environment. St Amant is a smoke-free campus, and rules are in place to protect students. It's not just school but medical issues also arise as kids share vapes with one another to start. "I mean, Covid is still around. It's flu season. Strep. And we have children in the bathroom just taking it from one mouth to the other mouth. It's gross and highly unsanitary." Boudreaux says. And these are just normal vaping issues. Situations can become seriously more dire as kids aren't aware of what is actually in vape carts. " From kids who are taking a hit of a device for the first learn about career paths. There are even signs of long-term issues coming from the effects of vaping. "We've seen with a handful of students who have really developed serious lung and medical issues, breathing issues from it. They've shared with us, their doctors have said it's from excessive vape use." Boudreaux says. She also mentions that kids find themselves vaping in reference to help with anxiety and psychological issues. But what kids aren't aware of is that vaping only worsens issues such as those. "We try to talk to students when they come in, and we try to get them to reflect on why they vape. So that if they can look within themselves and think, okay, am I doing it because I'm anxious about something? And I feel like this helps calm me down? Even though the science that we do have shows that it increases anxiety, it does the opposite." With these present medical issues comes the need to tell parents when their kids are caught vaping. "Another interesting thing is that when we find a device and we have to notify a parent, most times parents don't know their children are vaping and they don't want their children vaping." Boudreaux says. This will of course warrant some form of awareness of their child's actions. "One thing we want to work on is getting the word out to parents and to guardians to be on the lookout at home and to talk to their kids at home, because kids a lot of times value what their parents think and what their parents say." Boudreaux says. "And parents control phones and vehicles and gas money and fun money." FFA impacts each individual who joins the organization. Students involved in FFA are given a wide range of skills that will help them in the future. The skills can range from agricultural skills to learning life skills. Being a part of FFA allows emplovability and allows students to explore careers that they may not have known about before. Events FFA is Another thing that vaping affects is a distraction from the positive and the awareness of needing help fighting the addiction. The issue stems from kids becoming addicted and not recognizing that only they would want to stop. Which is often the depressing thing that comes with addressing the serious issue of vaping. "Kids tell us fairly often that it's involved in are livestock showcasing. Senior Pevton Blanchard. a member of the FFA club on the STA campus savs. "I have always had a passion for animals. and that is what led me to show livestock. Mv mother showed cattle when she was in high school. Showing livestock and being a part of FFA has truly been one of the greatest experiences of mv high school years." FFA leads individuals to be more knowledgeable all around in agribusiness. agrimarketing, science. communications. and in their future careers in the real world. FFA's Livestock Showcase St. Amant shows out at nationals BY: ELIZABETH LANGSTON BY: XYAN DOBARD Gata Data Reporter GATORS Gata Data Reporter FFA is a worldwide organization that focuses on growing leaders, building communities, and strengthening agriculture. The FFA Association in is made Louisiana up of nearly 13,000 members in 212 in 53 in 35 parishes. FFA stands for "Future Farmers of America". Although FFA isn't directly just for farmers, it's also welcoming to anyone who wants to pursue, grow, and hard to stop because nicotine is highly, highly addictive. So once you start, they're finding ways to get that nicotine hit, which is just a shame because it's detracting from more positive things in their lives." Boudreaux states on the topic. Then the administration has no idea how to help addicted students besides letting their parents know. There is no reform program for vaping. "Like when smoking was a thing, they were called smoking cessation programs. That means stopping programs. We don't know of any. They don't have that yet." Boudreaux says. "And I mean, from there, but we don't really have access to any kind of special program to help students stop vaping. So our main thing is to talk to parents and help parents try to deal with it at home. Because it does seem to be a physiological thing, not just a psychological thing. Their bodies are craving it." The only thing that can be recommended is reporting the issues to the child's doctor. GATOR "When you get down to the kind of heart of it, we want students engaged in positive things, not in negative things. Boudreaux says. The administration when kids do happen to suffer a major medical issue in need of immediate assistance, they need to stop everything and call an ambulance. This comes with a newfound fear that people in the same position as Boudreaux have to deal with. "Every time it happens, we're like, oh, my gosh, we want kids to come here and learn and be involved in positive things and grow and develop and achieve and thrive, and this does not fit into that equation. Vaping does not fit." Page 2 99 Just as Boudreaux says, Vaping will never fit into the equation of school life. "I just hope that students take that opportunity to learn about it and then try to make better decisions that will be better for them in the long run. There's no positive result of vaping that doesn't have a negative that cancels out that positive." She states. This is why the school is hosting a wellness night that will address these same issues, and bring awareness to parents and students alike. St. Amant's black squad cheerleaders showed up and showed out at Nationals this year in Orlando. The squad has 10 total been preparing months for this opportunity inc including summer camps and consistent practices throughout the well Gators placed year. The finishing fourth out of mark roughly 30 teams in gameday, and for traditionally finishing third. The Gators also received a notable achievement of becoming the first team in St. Amant history to get a score of zero deductions in their traditional routine. In other words, they performed a perfect routine. This launched them to finishing first place in the semi-finals out of 12 teams. The team finished third in the finals and overall left a notable mark on the tournament. Members of the team state that in order to improve for next year, they will need to work on consistency and begin practicing stunts earlier in the year. They stated that it wasn't a skill that was the issue, but more so ST STA newnique. This group is improve and perfect their craft in hopes of placing even higher next season.
