Earlier in the year, a new program on campus allowed leaders to learn and grow their skills with each other on campus. Teachers Kaylee Guidry, Megan Trahan, and Claudia Gremillion started the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy as a way for students to, "learn different skills needed and also put those in practice in their organizations" Guidry states. Student leaders from different extracurriculars on campus were invited to attend the academy to help grow themselves, their organization, campus, and community with the leadership skills being taught. During the academy's monthly meetings, student leaders go through activities and discussions to learn different qualities of leadership, as well as how they can benefit those around them. Aubrey Beale, member of the academy, explains, "One" thing I have learned is listening to other people's ideas. It's been a fun experience to go around and have different opinions and talk about all of them. It makes you feel really heard. 19 One part of the academy is helping the members plan a "Do-Good December" activity, where "we volunteer our time and we do something BY: HANNAH ROGILLIO Gata Data Reporter 44 ETBALL GATOR GATOR Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy brings the Christmas Spirit to our community for a certain group of people," says Beale. As part of the planning process, Guidry states, "We brainstormed in a meeting different ways we could help in our community and on campus. We did breakout sessions to see what ideas we had." Academy member Jaylyn Braud came up with the idea to help out the local battered women's shelter as part of the project. Once logistics were worked out, the academy decided to host a drive for the women and children in the shelter, as well as take a field trip to decorate the shelter for Christmas. Beale states, "We thought that it would be good to exchange with them, help them decorate for Christmas, and bring them supplies to help them feel the Christmas spirit. GATOR Although only academy members will be visiting the shelter, they ask that you contribute to the drive they are holding until December 8. The first 200 students that contribute to the drive can pick from one of 100 cookie/brownie/ice cream, 50 frosted beverage/milkshake, and 50 nuggets/sandwich redemption cards in room 228. December 2023 Environmental Science Club restores the coast BY: PARIS GOMEZ Gata Data Reporter Recently, the St Amant Environmental Science Club had the honor of working with LSU's Coastal Roots program to restore the land by the spillway. The Louisiana spillway, when opened, can harm the wildlife through flooding. This field trip consisted of planting Cypress and Oak Saplings that have grown within the school since last year. Emmerson junior and Co-President of the vironmental Science Club, gives more insight into exactly why these saplings and trees were chosen and "These saplings and soon to be trees have amazing roots that hold the soil together & can persevere through floods. They also increase biodiversity and provide an ecosystem for other animals that depend on this area. ESC visited the land and planted over 50 saplings in benefit for the local wildlife." I was able to gain new experiences & new knowledge about the environment & what LSUS Coastal Roots stands for," Longanecker said. Upon reflection of the field trip, Longanecker says "I enjoyed my experience when planting coastal root trees with my friends & fellow club members. This was an amazing experience that allowed me to get more in touch with the environment of Louisiana. 99 "By planting these trees, we hope to decrease coastal erosion in the area and aid in reforestation efforts," says Fresno Swindle, Junior and Co-President of Environmental Science Club, when asked about the future impact of the field trip. Longanecker adds, “A change I want to see from the planting of the cypress & oak saplings is a new prosperity & protection of our coast near the spillway.' However some changes offered by the officers were in consideration of more time to plant and the weather of the day chosen. Longanecker offers a brighter look however, saying "It got really hot easily but we were able to plant most of our trees and left us with barely any space to plant à more which is an amazing accomplishment." When asked for anything final she wanted to add, she wishes for more people to join the Environmental Science Club. Ask Allie Dear Allie, I am nervous to take my finals this year. I feel like I have so much to study and not enough time. I really want to keep my grades up with semester and my final grades can make or break them. Šo Allie, what is the best way to approach studying for finals? Sincerely, A Concerned Classmate. Dear Classmate, You are not alone. The month of December begins preparations for the dreaded finals week for lots of people. With LEAP around the corner, and finals not soon after, December can be a stressful period for many students. Finals can be difficult if you never refresh your mind on the topics from farther back. Make sure to look over everything that might be on the test. If it is a benchmark, it will typically include everything from the second quarter but if it is a CLEP or AP test, the entire semester of topics will be taken into account. PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CLUB a daily The first thing you can do is make a plan. Curating a schedule and checklist that evenly distributes your time is a great strategy for those that struggle with time management. Create a to-do list that prioritizes both study and downtime. This way, you can evenly divide your time instead of letting it all fall on the night before the test. Page 2 Allow yourself time to rest. Rest is important, whether it be a break in between study intervals, or your overall sleeping habits leading up to the test. Without this often overlooked responsibility, your brain will not function to its full potential during your final. Getting the recommended full eight hours of sleep before a test promotes your mind to work to its best ability. It is normal to experience frustration or exhaustion when studying for long periods of time, which is why it is so important to take study breaks. Go for a walk, listen to calming music, make snack, or call a friend, anything that will take your mind off the material for a short amount of time can make studying much less stressful and more efficient. a Lastly, if there is a topic you feel less confident about, never be afraid to ask questions. Stay a little later after class and watch your teacher do an example problem or ask a friend that also takes the class to help you. The internet is your friend and often has several videos of someone explaining the material you struggle with. Finals can be intimidating but by following these general guidelines, the process of studying will be more successful. Good luck Gators, Allie.
