November 2023 STA students plan to renovate new secret garden BY: SAVANNAH MATLOCK Gata Data Reporter St. Amant High School's Environmental Science Club and Art Club are collaborating to renovate an area on campus, with plans to turn it into a new secret garden. The clubs are taking donations for outdoor furniture, mural paint and plants. In a small outdoor area of the main building, facing the green parking lot, the "old" secret garden was built in an area considered outside of campus, where students cannot access during school hours. would wait there and it was so nice. I thought, 'why don't we have something like this that students can actually use during the day?"" Environmental Science Club Co-President Fresno Swindle says. Hana Malkawi, a sponsor of the club mentions that it is a great resume builder, "imagine writing to your college that you helped beautify your campus and also help save your local environment." The new garden is in the opening where students can buy 7 brew coffee, to the left of the main building doors. Students in the Art club are helping to create murals on all three walls in the area. They are also planning on using the fountain in the old secret garden, as well as outdoor furniture and plants. "It will be a natural place that people can visit," says Emmerson Longanecker, also Co-President of the Environmental Science Club. The St. Amant library is a resource many students don't utilize as much as possible. The library offers a variety of things like new books, the book club, and resume help. Lisa Braud is one of the helpful library workers and the sponsor of the book club. Ms. Braud shared with the Gata Data that, "being able to work with all the students in every grade level and all of the amazing staff," are some of her favorite things about the library. Students are welcome to visit the library in the main building before school or during lunch if they want to study, catch up on reading or have a quiet place to take a break from school. Also, if students forget their ID at home they can stop by the library in the morning before school to get a temporary ID or a brand new ID and lanyard. STA Library: A Hidden Gem on Campus BY: REBECCA CRESIE Gata Data Reporter Students can also now receive help creating their resume by contacting Ms. Braud by email or setting up a time with her during lunch. Students can expect to receive help with the formatting of the resume, what information should be listed and The garden will also have several plants, with the goal of giving pollinators more opportunities to pollinate. The space will be open for students to enjoy during both lunch shifts, and teachers will be able to rent it out during class time. If someone wants to use it during class hours they must have permission. "We will probably post the schedule in the new theater. We can do maybe a google form of who is using it and at what time," says Swindle. Sound "It can foster a sense of stewardship among the student body to take care of our natural environment, and generally will make the campus a more beautiful place," says Malkawi. The clubs are accepting outdoor furniture from anyone, not just STA staff and students. If someone is interested in donating, they can email swindle31469@students.apsb.org or longanecker38706@students.apsb.org for information about donating furniture. They are taking furniture that is "lightly used and can withstand outdoor elements (preferably not wood)". ody. The book club is another opportunity in the library for readers to share their current favorite titles that they are reading and learn about new books that they could read. The club also instead of reading the same book together, now instead everyone can choose from a collection of books or a title that they find on their own. Students can join the club by showing up to the meetings and participating in the monthly meetings. The library also has many new books! They carry fiction and non-fiction titles with an array of genres containing career books, cookbooks, fantasy and biographies. If students don't like any of the books, Ms. Braud would suggest students take a look at the selection of titles at the Ascension Parish Public Library. November 2023 STA Basketball starts off the season strong BY: BROXTON CRAWFORD Gata Data Reporter STA's new basketball season is starting to begin with a wave of new players that are hungry to show what they can do this season and the opportunity they have to win the district championship. The Gators are on a path of determination to succeed and be a championship contender this season. St. Amant's most recent game on November 14 against Chalmette (72-62) was a great battle that ended in a Gator victory. There were some causes for concern near half-time due to it being a neck-and-neck battle, but the Gators were able to shake off the pressure and get a win for their team near the fourth quarter. Head Coach Travis Uzee explains how it was a great win for the Gators "in the fourth quarter, we put together a handful of defensive possessions that were good and a handful of offensive possessions, and that was the difference in the game." Uzee stated. Uzee believes that the Gators are ready to take this season head on, regardless of the ups and downs of the jamboree against Parkview Baptist. Regarding the Gators win against Chalmette, Uzee adds, "as I just told the team, it looked like a first game, the good, the bad, but good teams find ways to win. And so that kind of ended up being the story of the game." Senior Brice Schilf is excited about what is to come this season and is confident in his team. He adds, "we're real deep this year, so I think we're prepared too as well. 'Cause we have a lot of people that can come out on the court and just contribute to us and for us." Schilf is also hopeful that this season will complete his senior year, he adds "But also just, you know, just playing with these guys because this is my last year. So just making the most outta my senior year and winning with these guys. I mean, other than district. Senior Lawson Bourgeois is also ready for this season, "I'm very excited for it because last year and the way it kind of ended. It ended good, but not exactly how we wanted. So I'm This year the boy's soccer team is warming up for their upcoming season. Their biggest goal for this season is to make it to the playoffs. When asked what has improved from the previous season, the members noted that their communication has improved as well as other techniques needed for successful games. Senior Levi Randall says, "I think that we've improved as brotherhood as far as having each other's backs and being there for each other and supporting each other emotionally and mentally, especially when things get hard and not being so hard on each other, but instead trying to help each other out." he continued "Skill wise, I think that we have definitely improved on getting the ball downfield and playing really tight and being able to make decisions really quick and confuse the other team. When Coach Adrien Garcia was asked what his goals for the season were he stated " Success in the playoffs? I want us to win more, lose less. I have faith in these guys." ready, I'm ready to get that back." Bourgeois wants to have a good playoff run this season, and adds, "I love a really positive record. A lot more wins and losses and just to have a good playoff run really." Another one of Bourgeois' focuses are the fan-base. He adds, "I mean, we need support. We gotta have people at the games. We need a good fan base, just like football got. We need the same support." The team is ready for this season and is hopeful for what is to come but not setting to many plans for the future, "I think our goal, like really with this group, is a lot of short-term goals and trying to improve every week." Uzee adds. Uzee is setting up his team to worry about the now rather than the later. Uzee talks about the new, young faces on the team and how hard they've been working, "these young guys are tough and they're excited about the season, so we're looking forward to competing with this group and looking forward to get this thing going, 'cause they're ready, they've been working hard." A typical in season practice consists of the two groups varsity and junior varsity stretching then working on drills and then conditioning. Senior Caden Garcia stated, "We do a lot of drills, we warm up, do a lot of stretching. Sometimes we do like conditioning at the end of practice just to make sure that we're fit for the games. And we do some finishing sometimes to make sure everybody's just on point, keeping their touches and shots on point, which is good throughout the season." When asked about the loss of previous players Senior Aldo Padron discussed that with the strong incoming freshman they are focused on moving forward and building up the team. Levi Randall says, "You form a chemistry where you get to work with each other well and you know how each other think, and then it's like when they leave the foundation, the leadership is all gone. It's kind of having to restart. You build relationships with those guys, especially coming in as a freshman or sophomore, and you get to know them, you get close and they leave and they go their own separate ways." They're sweet potatoes but they add dried sugar to them, and they're cut up into little circles, so they're hard but taste very sweet." Ama Aubrey Beale, Junior: "I like Pumpkin Pie, just because I really like pumpkins and it makes me feel like it's still Halloween" Dallin Winegar, Sophomore: "It would be the Mashed Potatoes, I grew up in Idaho, you know, so it's a good reminder of home and what it was like a year ago" Page 4 Robyn Denny, Art Teacher: "My grandmother always made Broccoli Rice and Cheese Casserole and it was my favorite thing in the world" Slayton Porche, Freshman: "My favorite Thanksgiving side dish has to be the cranberry sauce, because Jack Jordan, Junior: "The first thing that comes to my mind is Cranberry sauce. My mom makes this mushroom strudel stuff, and you get filo dough, and it's this very fluffy Greek dough; and then you take the mushrooms, and cream cheese and onions and then you bake them in this little concoction. Then you put it in the dough, and it's delicious"
