Page 4 Hughes wins annual sticky note contest BY: AGUSTINA BUSTOS Gata Data Reporter On October 4, Junior Abbie Hughes was announced winner of St. Amant's annual Sticky Note Contest. This contest is created to allow any student to express their creative ideas and talent onto a sticky note. It is meant to bring inventive e minds together and share many fun ideas with one another. Anyone is able to participate. This is Hughes second year partaking in the contest after placing second last year. Hughes claims to feel great about placing first after working on improving her skills since last year. She created a beautiful landscape of what she claims to be Italy. Hughes states, "I was inspired by an Italian painting and I just wanted to recreate it." Also spreading some excitement to our second place winner, Junior Fresno Swindle and third place winner, Senior Madison Roussel. Swindle created an impressive drawing using ballpoint pen and colored pencil. What he enjoys about this contest is the competition and being able to share creativity through this contest. He states, "I just enjoy drawing and having a reason to draw." He went in expecting to not place, but he successfully placed second place. Roussel created an outstanding, realistic drawing only using graphite pencil. She BY: BROXTON CRAWFORD Gata Data Reporter claims that she wanted to create something similar to her past drawings while still visibly showing her improvement throughout the years. Roussel states, "I learned that it's not only always about how talented or how well you can draw, it's about creativity and how well you can put out an idea," she continues to add, "It encourages you to stretch out your mind and think outside of the box." This contest lets everyone know that art doesn't have to be on a grand scale; even something as small as a sticky note can show great achievements and accomplishments. Have you enrolled in the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS)? The TOPS program is run by Louisiana Office of Student Financial Aid (LOFSA). TOPS provides Louisiana high school graduates that meet specific eligibility requirements with a scholarship, if they choose to attend a Louisiana public college or university. TOPS awards are considered scholarships, not loans; therefore, you do not pay them back. These scholarships will go towards your school tuition and are based on your TOPS CORE GPA and ACT/SAT test score. You can not use SUPERSCORE, but you can be a Jump Start student and be enrolled in TOPS. The TOPS CORE GPA is not the same as your cumulative GPA. Scores are determined by LOFSA at the end of each semester, and it may be different from the cumulative GPA. There are many common misconceptions about TOPS and all of the different opportunities the program offers. The problem for some students is that they've capped it at whatever the tuition was for those particular colleges in 2016, so if they raised tuition since then it can be slightly different now. TOPS also does not pay for college fees that the specific college institutes. TOPS can really make a difference with tuition. An LSU scholarship without TOPS would be about $11.954, but TOPS would pay $7,463. That's $4,491 you have to pay out of pocket in 2023. The amount per college will change yearly. You will still have to STAFF PHOTO BY: PARIS GOMEZ pay for tuition, but it's still a great help from what the normal pricing would be. Every Louisiana college accepts TOPS scholarships, even community colleges. You can be a Jump Start student and still get the TOPS Tech scholarship. Bonuses/Awards are given for the different types of scholarships, but they do not pay for campus bonuses (housing, food, etc.) There are four different types of TOPS scholarships, including TOPS Opportunity, TOPS Performance, TOPS Honors, and TOPS Tech (Jump Start). TOPS Opportunity is the base scholarship you will get with TOPS, and you need a 2.5 TOPS GPA, 20 on the ACT and 1030 on the SAT, to acquire the scholarship, but grants no award. TOPS Performance is the second tier scholarship and takes a 3.25 TOPS GPA, on the ACT and 1130 on the SAT, but you get a $400 award each semester. TOPS Honors is the best tier scholarship and takes a 3.5 TOPS GPA, 27 on the ACT and 1260 on the SAT, but you get a $800 award each semester. TOPS Tech (Jump Start) takes 2.5 on the TOPS GPA, 17 on the ACT or WorkKeys Silver+ on 3 Assessments, and 920 on the SAT, but this grants you no awards and you can only use TOPS Tech for two year Technical Programs, and some Associates Degrees at two and four year colleges.
