BY: MIA WEBB Gata Data Reporter St. Amant High School's athletic training and sports medicine program is one of the best in the country, as it is the only school to ever earn the national safe sports school award 4 times, and the first to ever earn it in the state of Louisiana. An athletic trainer's job is to prioritize the care, prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of student athletes. Coach Scott Arceneaux is currently the head of the program here at St.Amant. The Gata Data Arceneaux has been dedicated to the program for many years. "My favorite part of the job is getting to work with the student athletes as well as the student program. Most of the time you're going to get an athlete that's really vulnerable and is no longer able to do their sport or do those things, so getting to be a part of helping them to return and also being the support after they do return is great." says Arceneuax. hurt or get When athletes injured, first place they the normally go to is the training room. Not only does the training room and staff focus on the physical care and treatment of the athletes, but also the mental aspects of it all. The staff does their best to care for the athletes in any way possible, and it is crucial for every sport here on campus. The Gators sealed their victory when Caleb Ricks intercepted the Spartans for the second time, ending the game with a final score of 23-8 Gators. STA's "Swiss Army Knife" make a connection to help motivate them and help them come back and return to sports, you know that's huge. When we live in service to other people, it's very fulfilling and it brings a lot of happiness and joy to us." says Arceneuax. Many people don't understand exactly what an athletic trainer's job is, as members of the staff are not considered coaches or but more so healthcare trainers, providers. "We are kind of a swiss knife army because do prevention, we do core we do Ma care, we emergency management, we do a bunch of different we have things, nutrition aspects and we deal a lot with hydration, so many things and so of here." says Arceneaux. The student aid program here at St. Amant is also highly respected. Sports Medicine is offered as an elective class and there are many student aid workers in the training room at all times. "We have a great group of athletic trainers that enjoy doing their job and do it to the best of their ability to make it enjoyable for players and other people in the program," Because of Ricks' standout defensive performance, Caleb recently won the WBRZ Fan's Choice Player of the Week in his first varsity start. The student aids may not be able to handle as many serious issues as as the adults in the p program, but they still have many responsibilities and jobs to do in the training room. You could watch a documentary, go to latino/hispanic owned restaurants and visit museums such as the The New Orleans Jazz Museum. When asked how she celebrates Hispanic Heritage month, senior Fernanda Zamora Munoz said, "We celebrate by making delicious food and hanging out with the family." Though Hispanic Heritage month is only 30 days of the whole year, there is a need to make sure that we respect and celebrate Hispanic culture all the time. PRIDEL In the past week, some Ascension Parish citizens have been tasked with cleaning up their property after East Ascension and St. Amant High School students participated in an old tradition during their rivalry week. The week leading up to the football game between the two schools, students go out and "roll" each other's homes as a way to have some fun before the football teams battle it out on the field, but has this tradition been taken too far? Some students refrain from rolling because of the possible legal consequences they could face while out, including possible criminal charges. Louisiana Revised Statute 14.59 states that. "Tampering with any property of another. without the consent of the owner, with the intent to interfere with the free eniovment of any rights of anyone thereto, or ا Gogora with the intent to deprive anvone entitled thereto of the full use of the property" will result in an punishment "not more than five hundred dollars. or be imprisoned for not more than six months in the parish iail, or both." The act of rolling, which includes throwing toilet paper in trees. on houses, cars, etc. would fit under this Louisiana law, which has serious consequences. On top of this. Louisiana Revised Statute 14.63 gives consequences for Criminal Trespassing, which is also part of rolling, as most of the time. students do not have permission to go onto the owners propertv. BY: REBECCA CRESIE Gata Data Reporter Some students also chose to stav away from rolling because they deem the activity unsafe. In recent vears. students have added more than just toilet paper to their rolling Here at STA, there are plenty of interesting international trips and even more that are not listed in this article. School Officer Stephen Allain adds, "The problem is that it tends to get out of control with the paintballs, the airsoft, reckless driving and things of that nature." This new technology can cause bodily harm and has turned many students away from rolling, including Senior Emily Shamburger. She explains that she does not go rolling because "It's illegal and I don't know if it's honestly worth it because you could get seriously hurt." She also adds that another reason she steers clear of the tradition is because of the property damage these new technologies can cause. She adds that she has seen "numerous pictures of people with their cars that have been paintballed" and would like for her belongings to stay in good condition. But there are some students that are willing to take risks in order to get in on the rivalry between EA and STA. Senior Mia Webb explains that she went rolling because it was her senior year and wanted to be a part of this St. Amant tradition. Even though she participated, she still said, "Cops are always out and some people take it way too far and sometimes it gets scary. Overall, it is hard to shut down a tradition that has been around for so long and holds so many memories for students. But, as Allain says, "You don't want to kill traditions but other people that take advantage and do the wrong things are the ones that make it bad and ruin it for everyone else." It is important that students consider possible consequences that they could face when participating in rolling and to keep this tradition in good spirits.
