WATTSHAPPENING SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE WITH DR. CALVIN J. WATTS SEPTEMBER 2020 Welcome ack! #WeGotThisKSD Remote Learning Fall 2020-21 Dear KSD Community, This year will be unlike any other school year. However, our focus on doing what is right and best for students and staff remains the same. Since our buildings closed in March, the challenges presented to our students, families, and staff, continue to be thoroughly discussed and addressed by our entire leadership team and, most recently, our Back to School Taskforce. I firmly believe that the plan presented to and approved by the Board on August 12 represents the hard and smart work of the leaders at all levels of our KSD Community. I am incredibly proud of our entire KSD team. Our teachers, principals, custodians, paras, office managers, central office staff, nutrition staff, bus drivers, and every member of our team have been working together to make 2020-21 a fantastic school year. We continue to share regular updates and information with students, families, and the community through phone calls, emails, text messages, mobile app notifications, websites, social media, Peachjar flyers, and our news media partners. Our fall family survey data will help us to better understand, from both the district level and the school-lev- el, how well we are communicating with families, and how frequently we are communicating in their most preferred methods. When we consider communication through an equity lens, we often think about translation. The translation of our messages and updates is undoubtedly a high priority, and many of our communication tools offer instant translation via Google Translation, in addition to our Interpreter and Translation services available to support families. In remote learning, we must also consider access to technology and the internet. While we continue to expand technology support, I am also proud of our school staff and leaders who are modeling compassion and flexibility as we all adjust to this new learning environment. Our website has information and answers to frequently asked questions about remote learning, technology support and more. MEEKE PIONEER 2021 SENTOR Thank you to our parents and guardians for updating your contact information so that we may reach you with important updates from the school and district level. I am confident that our school leaders believe as much as I do that communication with our students, families, staff, and community is critical to family engagement and student success. I have witnessed our leaders work through the challenges and opportunities this remote environment presents, and I look forward to the innovative and compassionate connections that will be forged this year to support our student and professional growth. As we transition into the 2020-21 school year, our building leaders, teachers, and support staff will be placing a united emphasis on social-emotional wellness. It has been said that "compassion must be caught before it is taught." Right now, we could be more mindful of our compassion towards each other, especially when they are doing the right thing, in the right way, and for the right reasons. I believe our daily choice to lead with empathy and compassion is critical to the student and staff success this year. Thank you again to our staff, our students, our families, and our community partners. As we continue to work together, I know there will be challenges that will be presented to us this year. I also take great comfort in knowing we will continue to get through this together. Here is to a healthy, safe, and positive school year.
